What We Learned from the Businessman from Le Petit Prince

Traction is very important for startups.

We have to monitor all sorts of numbers related to growth, for example, the number of downloads, active users, blog visitors, blog views, fan page visitors, likes, shares, comments.

We have to constantly remind ourselves that it is not all about tracking the numbers.

When the Little Prince arrived at the fourth planet during his travel, he met a businessman and this is part of their conversation:

“Five-hundred-and-one million, six-hundred-twenty-two thousand, seven-hundred-thirty-one. I am concerned with matters of consequence: I am accurate.”

“And what do you do with these stars?”

“What do I do with them?”

“Nothing. I own them.”

“You own the stars?”

and later the Little Prince said

“I myself own a flower,” he continued his conversation with the businessman, “which I water every day. I own three volcanoes, which I clean out every week (for I also clean out the one that is extinct; one never knows). It is of some use to my volcanoes, and it is of some use to my flower, that I own them. But you are of no use to the stars . . .”

We often hear founders say “oh, we have several thousands of active users” or “we have several millions of registered users”. Grammatically it is correct, but do we really have them? As we own them? Too easily we focus on the numbers and forget that each number represents a group of users. What good can we do for them? Can we provide better services? Can we help them protect their homes and families? Can we provide them with useful information?

This is what sets Alfred apart. We care about our users as well as their loved ones. We try our best to solve each individual user’s problems (seriously: you should see our work communication channels), we scramble to answer all the Facebook messages (weekend? What is that?), and we are exhilarated when anyone tells us Alfred has made their life better. You are not just numbers for us!

If you’d like to share, be it a story, a photo, or a video clip, contact us and make our day!
